Usually during such trips I try to meet up with fellow spiritualists or<br \/>\nresearchers, this time it was the latter&#8230; <\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n16th April &#8211; I took the service at<br \/>\nthe Inverness Spiritualist Church (SNU) at the Smithton<br \/>\nHall.&nbsp; This church is always well<br \/>\nsupported and has a very active committee which has done a lot over the<br \/>\nyears to promote spiritualism in the North of Scotland. &nbsp;&nbsp;It is now two years since Rupert and Niki Baxter-Smith<br \/>\nstepped down from the committee.&nbsp; Niki as<br \/>\npresident for almost a decade Rupert, treasurer for the same length of time. &nbsp;&nbsp;But is good to see that although their health<br \/>\nis failing a little both still manage to get along to the church, in fact<br \/>\nRupert was chairing for me on my recent visit.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n25th It was a pleasure to be part of the<br \/>\ndevelopment circle whose sitters as I have mentioned before are so enthusiastic<br \/>\nand have a great thirst for learning.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n28th I was at the Milngavie and Bearsden<br \/>\nSpiritualist Sanctuary. This sanctuary has only been open for eight months and<br \/>\nalready has made great inroads to improving the spiritualist movement. More<br \/>\nabout this in a moment.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-eeK0J_uvUzU\/UYlQgQBALYI\/AAAAAAAAAlw\/9cS9g1UY5NE\/s1600\/BJ12.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/tomjohnstonspiritualistmedium.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/BJ12.jpg\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Recently there have been calls for the change in the format of our<br \/>\nSpiritual Services. Some interesting new proposals put forward that are worthy<br \/>\nof debate but others it looks like change just for the sake of change.&nbsp; Do<br \/>\nwe need changes to our format?&nbsp; Like everything else we cannot stand still<br \/>\nand should always try to move forward, go with the flow, about big changes to<br \/>\nbring in the younger members to our churches.&nbsp; Personally I don\u2019t think<br \/>\nhere in Scotland we have a problem in getting the young to attend our<br \/>\nchurches.&nbsp; But we cannot make radical changes to suit one group who are<br \/>\nnot yet members of our movement at the expense of those who have attended our<br \/>\nchurches for years.&nbsp; We cannot let the tail wag the dog.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Here in Scotland, Glasgow in fact, we have seen change to our service, a<br \/>\nsmall tweak here and there which has added, not detracted, from our<br \/>\ncommunication with God and Spirit.&nbsp; In August last year Glasgow medium<br \/>\nElizabeth Halliday was guided to open a spiritual place of worship and into<br \/>\nbeing came the Milngavie and Bearsden Spiritual Sanctuary &#8211; not<br \/>\nChurch.&nbsp; Now I know a lot of our Spiritualist places of worship have<br \/>\ndropped the name \u201cChurch\u201d for \u2018Centre\u2019 but that title can be confused with<br \/>\nPsychic Centres by the general public.&nbsp; I feel the \u201cSanctuary\u201d was a good<br \/>\nmove.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Then the time of the Divine Service &#8211; a Sunday afternoon.&nbsp; I know of only one other church in the area which<br \/>\nholds a Sunday afternoon service.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This gives the people<br \/>\nof Glasgow an alternative from the one morning and many Sunday evening services<br \/>\nwe have at the moment.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>The changes did not end there as Elizabeth decided to omit the opening<br \/>\nprayer.&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn its place there is<br \/>\nfive minutes of contemplation which gives us our own personal space to link<br \/>\nwith God, our loved ones in Spirit, or just to reflect on our week. Not<br \/>\nsomething I would have considered but I must say that I was impressed as with<br \/>\neach minute for reflection passed\u2019 I could feel the atmosphere getting stronger<br \/>\nand spirit drawing closer There is&nbsp;still the closing prayer.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>The \u201chealing Service takes place during the Divine Service.&nbsp; Three<br \/>\nminutes session of Healing for each patient and each session is finished by the<br \/>\ngentle clash from mini-cymbals.&nbsp; All this adding to the atmosphere within<br \/>\nthe church and we all get the benefit of the healing energies.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Small changes that have made a big impact to the Divine Spiritual Service<br \/>\nin a positive way.&nbsp; No shouting about change \u2013 no dramatic changes \u2013 just<br \/>\na small tweak here and there.&nbsp; I would recommend committee members of<br \/>\nSpiritualist Churches in the area go along to the Fraser Centre, Douglas St,<br \/>\nMilngavie, Glasgow, G62 6PA and experience this change in format.&nbsp; It may<br \/>\nbe for your church or it may not but go along and see.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Keeping with Elizabeth\u2019s Sanctuary&#8230;&nbsp; Laying a wreath at the<br \/>\nCenotaph on Remembrance Sunday in Whitehall has for a long time been an issue<br \/>\nbetween the SNU and the British government, considering that other UK religious<br \/>\ndenominations are represented at the national service of remembrance and<br \/>\nSpiritualism is not.. But individual spiritualist churches throughout the<br \/>\ncountry do take part in local remembrance services, the Stirling church (SNU)<br \/>\nbeing one. Recently I asked Stirling churches President Linda Buchan how this<br \/>\ncame about and she replied \u201c<i>We were asked to take part in the service\u201d.<\/i><br \/>\nWell, it was the same with the Milngavie spiritualist sanctuary they were asked<br \/>\nto take part in the local remembrance ceremony even though they had only opened<br \/>\nits doors a few weeks ago. I hear constantly from spiritualists <i>\u201cWe never<br \/>\nget to the remembrance day services<\/i>\u201d. Well, if your&nbsp;church is not<br \/>\nasked to take part it is up to you to ask to be included.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-GqZ7HetcqBs\/UYlQI7qZqDI\/AAAAAAAAAlo\/IotzzaM6Ni4\/s1600\/Floraide+072.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/tomjohnstonspiritualistmedium.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Floraide-072.jpg\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Continuing with your comments on my <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u201c2013 A Crucial Year for Spiritualism\u201d.<\/i><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Vera emails; &#8211;<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u201cMaybe<br \/>\nthe way some of your churches advertise the mediums to their platform is a big<br \/>\npart of the problem.&nbsp; My spiritual<br \/>\nchurch will put in our advert in the local paper something like \u2018The medium for<br \/>\nSunday evening is John Smith from wherever\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nBut some churches go over the top with their comments of the medium especially<br \/>\non facebook, so what have the general public to think?<\/i><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Yes this is a good point this has been creeping in<br \/>\nfor some years now and something that can be easily rectified if the committee<br \/>\nis willing to put the church and spirit before or on an equal footing with the<br \/>\nmedium.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Dawn is on roughly the same track with \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Not so much on their websites but certainly<br \/>\non facebook mediums seem to advertise themselves as being at a particular church<br \/>\nand the way they put it is is as if they want their fan-club to come along and<br \/>\nsee them.&nbsp; Surely a regular church goer<br \/>\nwould turn up at a church what every medium was on?\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Yes \u2013 again the emphasis being on the medium not the<br \/>\nreligion or Spirit.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Ralph \u2013 \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Lack<br \/>\nof education as to what spiritualism is about.&nbsp;<br \/>\nA couple of workshops and many feel they know it all, whether it is on<br \/>\nthe platform or opening a church.&nbsp; There<br \/>\nis little deep-rooted knowledge of what spiritualism is really about these days\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Again the fast-tracking that we experience in our<br \/>\neveryday lives and has certainly entered our movement.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/i>Anne \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Money is<br \/>\nat the root of all the problems spiritualism has to day.&nbsp; Too many wanting to make a living out of<br \/>\ntheir psychic abilities, a good living.&nbsp;<br \/>\nOur churches were closer to Spirit and God when we had amateurs on our<br \/>\nplatforms.&nbsp; Many use our churches as a<br \/>\nspringboard to a lucrative career. His mother is dying. You<br \/>\nthink you know them.<\/strong> <\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>There are so many forms of bullying and it can have a devastating effect<br \/>\non those at the sharp end.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Some don\u2019t realise that they are causing so<br \/>\nmuch suffering with their little jokes at the expense of others.&nbsp; What they think is a sense of humour is<br \/>\nactually a form of bullying. Then there are those who get morbid satisfaction<br \/>\nwith outright bullying.&nbsp; The more they<br \/>\nsee the victim getting distressed the stronger and more constant the bullying<br \/>\nbecomes.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>Recently I was talking to victim of bullying who just could not take any<br \/>\nmore. They said they had been bullied for years and in the past only managed to<br \/>\ncope because they knew that when they got home and slammed the door closed they<br \/>\nwere was safe.&nbsp; Safe till the next time<br \/>\nthey went to school, their workplace or shopping<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<strong>But now-a- days with modern technology they could not even get a little<br \/>\nrespite in their own home. They were bullied by text and email.&nbsp;&nbsp; This forced them to give up their mobile<br \/>\nphone and Internet connection.&nbsp; But they<br \/>\nstill worry about what is being said about them on the social networks.
