Monday Night is Fledglings Night…“2013 – A Crucial Year for Spiritualism” Debate Still Goes On and On…… Glasgow’s Spiritual Museum…

23rd – February… There was a good turnout for my workshop
at the Glasgow Association of Spiritualists.
Workshop-1 was starting off from the basics, something that I feel is
neglected today.  Even many development
circles these days seem to start off from the first senior school level and
those taking part have missed out on nursery and primary school

24th
– I was over in the Kingdom of Fife to  ASK
Dunfermline A.S.K. is a non denominational organisation, which promotes
Spiritualism through Divine Services every Sunday, Demonstrations of
Mediumship, Spiritual Healing, Private Consultations,(readings), having regular
Workshops and Open Days for the public.
Recently one of ASK’s co-founder members Helen McArthur made the
transition to the higher side of life

26th –I attended the Free Spirit Spiritualist Church,  Kilmarnock…

27th – Paisley Spiritualist Church, Glenburn Community
Centre….

8th – 12th March I had a
busy few days at the Glasgow Association of Spirituists.

During my days at the Glasgow Association I was
tempted so often as a mountain of Easter eggs grew higher and higher in the
church.  The eggs are being donated by
churchgoers to a Children’s Charity.  The
church also hosted a night of clairvoyance with Nita Saunders on the Platform
and a donation was given to this charity.

                                                              Fledglings…

The committee of the Glasgow
Association of Spiritualists have decided that after the service on Monday evenings
to let their fledglings (developing mediums) on to the platform to gain
valuable experience.  After I took the
Monday evening service I nipped downstairs for a cup of tea and changed my mind
about not going back up to watch the fledglings.  My original decision not to go was based on
when I was at the fledgling stage.  I
found it so stressful to go on the platform as it was – but if the medium had
stayed behind for the fledgling’s participation – then I found it almost
impossible to put a foot on the platform.
So my first decision not to attend was to save the two fledglings any
more stress than they would normal have.
But the two on that evening Elaine Claire O’Neil and Kay Baxter were not
as sensitive as I was at that stage in my development.  They gave really good evidence.  Good training, dedication, patience and the
opportunity to take part in such an evening is all part and parcel of the
development of a good Spiritual Medium.
I really enjoyed the second part of the evening and if I am close to
Somerset Place on a Monday evening I will make sure I drop in.  Why not go along also and see the Mediums of
the future developing on a Monday evening.

I was going to move on to other comments made about
my “2013 – A Crucial Year for
Spiritualism”
but here are three comments to end the Spiritualism is earning that label of entertainment rather than
religion
.  I have tried to balance showing
both sides of the argument and a neutral comment.

? Emails –
“Spiritualism became entertainment when tutors at our colleges, churches, and
circle leaders forgot that they should be working in harmony with Spirit for
the betterment of all mankind.  What we
are trying to develop is a gift and a privilege that we should not abuse.  There are a lot of actors (I am not prepared
to demean true Mediums by giving these people the “M” title) who discover if
they put on a show that is what the enlightened people want, it would reflect
on themselves rather than Spirit.  They
only want to hear that their loved one is OK nothing else.  The actors only want their egos polished and
money as new people coming in do not know any better.    The best Mediums of MODERN Spiritualism
were the ones from the older era of the lower classes or the uneducated…  Why?
Because they could not pull the wool over people’s eyes as they believed
that they were of lesser value to the social elite and that kept their egos in
check.  They understood that they were
there to aid and assist NOT to demand anything.
All religions are suffering from actors”’

Now from Daisy –

Tom you are a
dinosaur and if Spiritualism listens to you it will disappear like those large
creatures.  Orthodox religion is on the
wane because like you it will not change, it will not come into the modern
world.  In fact we should stop using the
words “Church” and “Religion” when communicating with those who have moved on
from the Earth Plane. I read an article that you wrote comparing dying with
emigrating to another part of Planet Earth.
We can communicate with those who have moved to America, Canada,
Australia, New Zealand and the likes without ‘religion’ or ‘churches’.  So should we not open up the Spirit World to
all?  Surely it does not matter whether
it is a pub,
club or in the open
air.  Let those who have this gift be
free to communicate to the whole of society without you trying to shackle them.  Tom I know you will not put this up on your
website but I have to send it just the same”.

And now “H” steps in to the affray like a blue helmeted UN peacekeeper…

“There is no need for
conflict but I agree a line should be drawn between those who are on the side
of religion and those who look to use their gifts in other ways.  A medium usually does not ask a church to put
them on their platform they certainly did not in the past.  So each church has the power to select who
they want on their platform.  Should
churches not give their blessing to those who wish to go down the entertainment
and financial path their blessing but not allow them on the platform of their
church.  It is then up to the medium to
decide what path they take”.  So
simple…

Three different side of the argument…
My own thoughts are more in line with”?” I also agree with “H” it could
be simple to sort out if personal
responsibility
and common sense
prevailed.  Daisy – why did you think I
would not put your comments on this site?
I look on this as a serious issue and all sides of the argument have to
be heard if we are going to sort it out.

Glasgow has many museums and one that few may know
about, will be of interest to readers of this site. The Glasgow Association of
Spiritualist, Church Museum. 6/7 Somerset Place, Glasgow,

The
museum was instigated by the discovery of photographs of Spirit extras, which
also coincided with the celebration of Glasgow Association of Spiritualist 140
years. A number of committee members then worked together and created the
museum as you see it today.

Many
of the items on display at the museum were donated by Minister James Biggin, Mr
George Biggin and his wife Irene. The Association are grateful to them for
their generosity which will allow future generations of Spiritualists to see
some of the wonderful experiences that had occurred.

With
donations from kind people, the Church Museum reached its present excellent
state of presentation.

A
personal visit to the museum is very much worthwhile in order to appreciate
some of the history of modern spiritualism.

The
museum is open before and after services which are; –

Sundays – 11.30am and 6.30pm

Mondays – 7.30pm

Tuesdays – 2.00pm

There is also; –

 Private Readings are available as

Saturdays from 10.00am till 11.30am

The
Awareness Group is held every Friday at 7.30pm (
doors close at 7.25pm prompt)
This is a general development / awareness group which is taken either by the
visiting medium, or by a member of the Church.
Content varies from talks to practical sessions, but one thing remains constant
– everyone is very friendly, so don’t be afraid to come and join in!
The cost for this is £3 and includes a cup of
tea or coffee.

So
if you are visiting Glasgow why not take in the museum and a service.

A Special Little Lad…….Comments by others on – Is Spiritualism Leaning Towards Entertainment?….Do we really care about horses”? Egg dilemma… A Horse’s Prayer… An Eskimo quote…

                                                                    MY DIARY

3rd February saw me at the Sunnyside
Spiritualist Church, Coatbridge.  Robert
provided the live music with his guitar and that fairly raised the atmosphere.

4th – I was at the Cumnock Spiritualist
Church and although there was a good turn out one little fellow was missing –
Jack young, son of founders of the church Jacqueline and Iain McConnachie. Jack
has been a little poorly recently and it was felt that staying cozy at home was
best rather than taking the little lad out into the frost and snow. Jacqueline
is an excellent Spiritual Medium and Iain when called upon gives a wonderful
Spiritual address. Jack is a little star in his own with the article in the
Scottish Sun “The Bravest Smile in the World”. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/scottishnews/4768271/The-bravest-smile-in-the-world.html.

I look forward to seeing Jack on my next
visit.

11th
-15th  I combined a few days
holiday in Yorkshire with meeting up with a psychic researcher who is working
on an unusual case at the moment.

17th
_ It is always a pleasure to attend the Friendship of Love and Light Spiritual
Church, Foxbar, Paisley.  This church is
also referred to as “Eddie’s Church” after
its founder Spiritualist medium Eddie Docherty.

18th
– I had the short drive to Saltcoats Spiritualist Church which holds its
service in the Argyll Centre.  Wendy,
Jean and Irene are always at hand to greet all who enter the church.

 19th
– I was at the Glasgow Central Spiritualist Church (SNU) Berkley Street,
Glasgow, for their afternoon service which is always well attended.

 21st
Now that the M74 has been completed it
is a much shorter journey for me to the White Dove Spiritualist Church in Toryglen,
Glasgow.

There have been many
comments to “2013 – a
Crucial Year for Spiritualism – The Religion
which appeared in my
first blog of the New Year.  The comments
came by email, text, phone, face to face and even two letters.  They were on all aspects of Spiritualism, so
for the next few months my blogs will look at these comments as far as different
aspects of Spiritualism are concerned.  I
have tried my best to give a balanced view of the comments sent to me.
There
are many who agree that the general trend these days is that Spiritualism is moving
towards ‘showbiz’.  Some favour this while others have either
stopped attending our churches or have moved to another Spiritualist Church
where there is a more staid atmosphere.
Flo
comments – “I am all for a more upbeat
service than what I experienced when I came into Spiritualism 25-years- ago,
but some of what we are seeing on our platform these days is  going a bit over the top”.
James
I have been attending Spiritual
services for over twenty years and. I notice little change, but I only attend
SNU churches.
Joan –
“The only difference at my church is that
there is not a break between the medium’s address and the clairvoyance.  This I find is a good move for the medium as they
continue with the flow of the energies they have created”.
Jen –
“My daughter I attends drama school and I
am beginning to wonder if some mediums have been on the same course. This has
only started to show in the past few years”.
Peter
– “Never been in a Spiritualist church
other than a SNU one and I feel things are as they should be”.
Pat – “I have been attending Spiritualist services
for over thirty years in both Scotland and England.  In those far off days I preferred the
Scottish services as they were always that bit more relaxed and informal than
in England.  Both have now moved on and I
am finding that these days services south of the border services are upbeat but
not as glitzy as some of those in Scotland.
B – “Spiritualism caters for all… One can go
dressed in a suite and a tie while another goes in very casual attire yet no
one bats an eyelid.  This is as it should
be and another big plus for Spiritualism compared to other religions is the
different ways each medium work, making every service different”.
Patricia
– “I know of many whom say openly they go
to our church for a laugh as it is the cheapest form of entertainment in town.  As this group grows in numbers there is talk
of leaving out the address so if that goes so do I also”.
Don – “Laughter has always been part of
Spiritualism but these days I feel that many a medium feels they have got to
have laugh after laugh after laugh.   Why
not leave it to Spirit as was done in the past?”
? – “Over the years I have taken many friends
and work colleagues with me to church and in doing so giving them their first
introduction into our religion.  But not
so often these days as I am embarrassed by what is going on in some of our
so-called churches.
John – “I have only been attending Spiritualist
Churches for two years so I cannot compare then with now.  The Sunday night Divine Service is the
highlight of my week.  I only wish I had
turned towards Spiritualism many years ago”.
Pete –
I only attend the church because it is a
good distance from our home.   With poor public transport and my mother’s
health not being that good I drive her there each week.  I can take what you are saying about the
change over the past few years.  On many
occasions the medium appears to be a celeb and Spirit is only the supporting
cast.  . In recent years my old mum has been
a bit put out by mediums on the platform referring to her as ‘dear’, ‘pet’ and
‘love’.  This would never have happened
in the past.  On saying all this when the
time comes that my mother moves over to the Spirit World I will not attend any
more services”.
E – “Notice how we don’t get any hassle from
other regions these days?  My theory is
that Spiritualism moved towards new ageism and now on to entertainment that we
will continue to destroy ourselves from within and soon will be no more.”
Betty
Each church has its own way of working
as does each medium.  With such variety
there is something for everyone”.
Marie
“I am shocked that there are some
congregations applauding not only after the clairvoyance but an odd time after
the address.  Who are they applauding the
Medium or Spirit?”
Vera –
The way some churches advertise their
medium on the Internet and from the platform is something that should be looked
at.  It is at time like an entertainer is
being introduced”.
So a
wide variety of thoughts about how Spiritualism is evolving.
The
SNU and other major Spiritual organizations have strict guidelines but there
are many independent Spiritualist churches which have their own way of
working.  It is just like the many
different facets of Christianity.    There
will always be change; my gripe is not if
it is working don’t fix it,
but that we don’t just have change for the sake of change.
We
hear of drastic proposals being suggested to bring in the young.  I don’t know where these people are coming
from as most the churches I serve have a good percentage of young people in the
congregation.  There will be sections of
the community who steer clear of the word “church”
so some of our Spiritualist Churches centres have dropped this work and
replacent it with “Centre” or “Sanctuary”.
One
new Spiritualist group not only dropped the word ‘Church’ for ‘Sanctuary’ but
also decided to change a part of the Divine Service.  It omitted the opening prayer and replacing
it with a period of contemplation.   That has been a well thought out change and
does not take anything away from the Divine Service.
I
agree with Marie about applauding after a service I find it embarrassing and
just wonder what anybody visiting the church for the first time must think of
us.  But I realize that the applause is
meant in good faith the congregation showing that they have enjoyed the service
but it is a service not an evening of entertainment.  This can easily be sorted out by the
chairperson quietly mentioning this to the congregation…. BUT… here again I
experienced after the service where the chairperson asked very respectfully
that the congregation show their sincere gratitude to the Medium AND TO SPIRIT
for their participation in the service. To which the congregation gave a short
applause.  The way it was done I found it
to be very respectful…
Churches
dropping the address is something that I have always been adverse too.   As Patricia says some church committees will
say “The congregation have told us they
cannot be bothered with the address”.
But
those on the committee of a Spiritualist church have a responsibility.  A responsibility to our religion, to Spirit
and to the pioneers of our movement.    People
are more likely to be vocal if they don’t like something than if they do like
it.    What other religion would drop part of what
their religion is about because a few say they don’t like it?
There
is also “The medium will give a quick
address”.
    This makes it seem that
the address is not important and can put the medium under pressure.  To be fair I once witnessed a medium’s
address that lasted for 45-minutes and after that there was only time for two
messages from Spirit. If that was to happen too often it would close our
churches.   Again if the medium is
working through Spirit then let us trust Spirit to do the correct thing and
usually that is a 10-12 minute address.
Joan
makes an interesting comment “The only
difference at my church is that there is not a break between the medium’s
address and the clairvoyance”.
  I can
work either way but some mediums feel that they need that little break while
others are happy to keep going.  Usually
churches and mediums are flexible with this and there is no problems whatever
way it goes.
Vera
also brings up a good point “The way some
churches advertise their medium on the Internet and from the platform is
something that should be looked at.  It
is at time like an entertainer is being introduced”.
Yes I have to agree with this.  In recent years it is as if a few church
notices and introductions are as if an entertainer is being introduced.  One night the chairperson sounded like an MC
in a boxing ring as he introduced me.
BUT… this is not rife and should be nipped in the bud.  Many doing this just don’t think that over
playing the medium is putting Spirit and our religion in the background.   Overall most of what has been mentioned in a
negative sense can easily be put right if there is more training for those
about to sit on a committee of a Spiritualist Church.
Spiritualism
as a Religion will be judged by the way we behave in our churches so let us get
it right.

No matter where I have been in the past few weeks
the main topic of conversation has been horsemeat ending up on supermarket
shelves.  There are many who are shocked
that they may have consumed the meat of a horse.  They have no problem in eating beef, pork or
chicken so why is horse flesh taboo?
Maybe it is because of man’s closeness to the horse over centuries.  The war horse was cherished as it carried
knights of old into battle; in fact the British army were still using horses as
pack animals in WWII.  For centuries the horse
did all the heavy work on farms and industry.
Nearly all of us have had a ride on a pony or a donkey at the
beach.  And some have been lucky to have
owned a horse or a pony as a pet.  So
there are many reasons why we find it abhorrent to eat the flesh of a horse.  Usually when we think of a cow or a sheep we
think of them being as part of a herd or a flock we don’t think or get to know
them as individuals.

But our love for the horse has its limitations as we
turn a blind eye when it comes to the racehorse.   Most of us will have had a bet on a horserace
at one time or another, even though it is only an annual bet on The Derby or
The Grand National.  Yet a percentage of
each £ bet goes to help fund an industry – yes – an industry not a sport.  And I don’t feel that this is the place to go
into gory details of the Racing Industry other than to say it would not make
good reading.
So should a Spiritualist abstain from betting on
horseracing?  Spiritualism is not a
religion with a list of do’s and don’ts – so with our 5th Principle
in mind – Personal Responsibility – it
is up to the individual.

Roughly in parallel with my comments above….  A friend was in a supermarket the other day
and as she went to lift down a dozen eggs she heard a conversation between a
mother and her young son and daughter.
The young lad was telling his mother than she had
put the wrong eggs in her trolley.   “Those
are not free
range” he
said”.  The mother told the two
youngsters that money was short this week and that she only could afford the
cheapest eggs from caged hens.  The two
youngsters burst into tears saying that they were not going to eat eggs from
hens that were treated so badly.  They
were so strong in their convictions that the mother put the eggs back on the
shelf and said! “Well – we will do
without eggs this week”.

As my friend was waiting till the mother was away
from other shoppers and was going to give her the extra money for the free
range eggs – three people came up to the family and discreetly gave them some
money to get eggs from hens that would have room to move during their life.   There are a lot of decent people around but
we seldom notice them or their good deeds get reported.
But surely in a case like this no one should feel
guilty if their finances could only stretch to eggs from caged hens?  Not an excuse but saying to themselves “When I am in a better financial position the
first think I will do is buy the eggs from birds that maybe have not been
treated perfectly but then have not been confined to a few inches of space”.

The poem page this week has “A Horse’s Prayer”.  This has been taken from a wonderful website In Praise of the
Horse
is Hoofbeat in Heaven’s library of horse poems, prayers
and stories that celebrate the spiritual horse as well as the unique bond
between horse and human. This is a one-of-a-kind equine poetry site because the
majority of selections were written by visitors to Hoofbeats in Heaven and/or
members of our horse loss support group in honour of their heavenly horses.  To date the  library contains 131 poems, stories, and
prayers. So relax, stay a while, and experience first-hand the wondrous bond
that only a horse and his/her
human know.

I am having a wee bit of
a problem with the email address for this site but if you put up on your search

Birthday Tea for a Loyal Member…Our Psychic Abilities… Hughesdale Spiritual Church…..Favourite Hymn… A Series of Workshops….

13th January saw me take my first service
of the year at Falkirk and District 8
Burnhead
Lane (SNU), Falkirk, FK1 1UG.  As I have
mentioned several times in the past that this church not only has its own
premises but it uses them to the full with something going on most nights of
the week.

16th…
I was taking part in a discussion on ‘Reincarnation’.

17th… I was taking a development Class
and although the numbers were small there was plenty of enthusiasm.  Not that I am complaining as a few
enthusiastic people are better that a full room of people who are only half
interested.  I only hope that those
attending enjoyed the night as much as I did.

20t… This time to the Stirling
Spiritualist Church, 27 King Street, Stirling, FK8 1DN.  The weather was Ok going but we had to drive
through a snowstorm on the way home…

27th This time it was south instead of
north to the Ayr Spiritualist Centre (SNU) 10 Alloway Place, Ayr, KA7 2AA.
 This turned out to be a special;
night as after the service a surprise tea for long time member and committee
member of the Centre Marjory Hatherill who was celebrating her 80th
birthday.  Marjory flings her heart and
soul into the Centre, her main interest being healing.  She also enjoys the after class where she has
been known to be very accurate with her readings.

30th…  It was back to continue the discussion on ‘Reincarnation’ where we left off the
week before.  Those attending the first
session decided that two hours was not enough time to get fully in to this
controversial subject as far as Spiritualism is concerned.

Many of us, even within Spiritualism, can mistake
our own ‘psychic abilities’ thinking what we are experiencing is a link from Spirit.  Our sixth
sense
– our psychic ability – is
something we all have but many don’t know they have this 6th sense.  Around
this time last year gave a talk on “Understanding
Your Psychic Abilities
”.  Unknown to
me at the time my words had given a gentleman in the audience food for thought
and it was only last week he approached me with the following story…
 He has given
me the OK to tell his story on here so as long as I change his name, so I will
refer to him as Alec.
Alec had studied hard at college for his chosen
profession but once in that line of work he found his heart was not in it. He moved
on to several different jobs with the same results. Eventually a friend of
Alec’s father offered him a job in his Estate Agents business.  Alec having no interest in such a job at that
time and only took it till something more suitable came along.   But he took to this line of work like a fish
to water.
As time went on he felt he maybe had the gift of
fortune telling.  Entering a property for
the first time he could tell if it would sell almost as soon as it went on the market,
soon after it was on the agencies books, or it would be extremely difficult to
move on.  This he felt was more than just
the experience one gets with years in a job.
There could be two houses right next door to each other or in the same
street with their upkeep, decor and garden in the same condition, yet he could instantly
tell how quickly or slowly they would take to move on.
Alec started to get carried away with this talent he
felt he had.  He boasted to his family
and friends about his fortune telling abilities.  But he was soon deflated when others put him
to the test.  His predictions of score
draws were never all that accurate so his friends did not become rich by
getting twenty-four points on treble chance.
It was the same negative results with the National Lottery.
So Alec decided he may not be a Fortune Teller after
all and just be in the perfect job for him.
He had quickly learned to have an eye for a quick selling property.  His wife said it was just the experience he
had gained over the years but all this did not sit too well with Alec.
He did a little bit of investigation into predicting
the future and a friend suggested he visit a Spiritualist Church for answers.
He was given a short shrift response by a representative of the church, who said
to him in a loud and scolding voice
“Fortune Telling has nothing to do with Spiritualism”.
Yes that is correct, but surely she could
have taken a little more time to hear Alec’s story and maybe have given him a
bit of advice.
Years passed with Alec thinking there was more too
all this and looked forward with interest to my talk to a club he belonged
too.  Once a month they have a guest
speaker but never before on such a topic “Understanding
Your Psychic Abilities”.
A few weeks ago Alec phoned me and said – “Your talk was most interesting, but unlike
any other talk I have heard at the club, your words were not forgotten by the
following day.  I tried to relate what
you said to my own life and so much seems to fall into place.  So many of my questions appear to have been
answered.    I started to pick out certain properties and
concentrated on the owners or tenants before the sale of many of the properties
I had been involved with…  Now I
believe I was picking up the happy or the sad vibes that came from those
families, the memories they left behind.
My sixth sense was picking up these vibrations”.
First my talk and then Alec’s research made him
realise why he was so accurate with  how
easy or difficult it would be to sell a particular property.  It was with his ‘psychic awareness’ not ‘predictions’.  If Alec was sensing positive and
comfortable vibes when he entered the properties then prospective buyers would
feel the same.  The Estate Agent went on
to give many examples that were similar to the experiences I and other psychic
researchers feel when entering a property.
In fact I am sure most looking at
a house for the first time feel positive or negative vibes.  “This
house is for me…  I knew right away
this house was what I have been looking for…. From the minute I stepped
through the door I felt I could not be happy there”.
So how much is your psychic abilities kicking in to different aspects of your life yet
you have paid little attention to it?

If
I said to you the address of the church was at the corner of Paoth and Kangaroo
Roads you would soon realise that the church is in Australia.  The church in question is the Hughesdale  Spiritual Church.  Spiritualist Medium Moira McMillan has been
President of the church for fourteen years.
We have been good friends for many years after we made contact on a
website on Spiritualism.  I asked Moira
if she would like to tell us a little about her church and its history.

“The church came into being in 1976 when
a small group of ladies decided it too far to travel to the city church each week.
 When approached for rental space
the local council was a bit concerned!  What was this strange church?   However they gave permission and the church
began with only a few dollars to their name.
The early days were spent doing a lot of fund raising; psychic days were
popular and well attended.  The leader
being of  Scottish decent did very well and it is due to their efforts and
investments that we are able today to continue the work of the church despite
rising costs and more Insurance demands made on us.   This church
came into being 37 years ago and we still meet in the same hall.

The church offered a Sunday
service, medium-ship development, healing, and today we offer the same
thing.   Two of our committee running
development classes in their homes and a healing group meeting every two weeks.
Of course companionship with like minded people is a big factor and comfort for
those who are troubled or in need.

Our Committee is small, a total of
5 dedicated people who work together in harmony week in week out. We also
have a small number of church members who are willing to lend a hand when
needed. As we meet in a public hall there is setting up and packing up to
attend to and we welcome those extra hands.   We do have a book stall
to provide suitable reading to those interested in the many subjects
pertaining to our work with Spirit.   Membership is around 50 but as
in any church the attendance varies.  Mostly
about 18 but this can go higher or lower on any given week.

Most of our mediums come from around the
Melbourne area; one comes by driving nearly two hours from his country home, others
from outer Melbourne including the nearby Dandenong ranges”.

Connor asks – “What is your favourite hymn, words and music they need not be the
same”.

Connor
asks – “What is your favourite hymn,
words and music they need not be the same”.
Hi
Connor my favourite hymns both words and music is “All Things Bright and Beautiful”
This was also my mother’s favourite hymn and she asked for it to be sung
at her funeral.  Almost all of us have
sung this hymn at one time but have we taken time to study the words?  How about doing that right now…
All Things Bright and Beautiful
Refrain

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.

Refrain

[Most hymnals omit the following verse]

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
He made them, high or lowly,
And ordered their estate.

Refrain

The purple headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.

Refrain

The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one.

Refrain

The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,

To gather every day.

Refrain

He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

Refrain

2013 a Crucial Year for Spiritualism – The Religion… The Snowdrop…

May I wish everyone good health and happiness in 2013…..

After a full month break from churches I am back at
Falkirk Spiritualist Church SNU on Sunday.

                          2013 a Crucial Year for
Spiritualism – The Religion?

To some 13 is an unlucky number – and to
Spiritualism – The Religion – the 13th year of the twenty-first
century could be a crucial year.  This
could be the year that as a religion we sink below the waves and a year where
many of our churches become looked upon as little more than places of
entertainment.  If things go on the way
that they are doing, then there will be no
comeback.

We in Spiritualism have a great responsibility on our
shoulders.  By “WE” I mean all of those
who have anything to do in the name of Spiritualism.    We
must cast aside all the dross that has attached itself to Spiritualism the
Religion.

 ·
We must separate the psychic from the
spiritual.

 ·
The entertainment from the
religion.

 ·
The ego from the caring and pastoral
side.

 ·
The money making ventures from Spiritualism
the Religion.

We must be strong in our endeavour to separate the religion
from the money making ventures and “Entertainment”

According to The Spiritualist National Union; –

Spiritualism the Religion = 7 PRINCIPLESPHILOSOPHY – RELIGION – SCIENCETHE HISTORY….

The Nature of Spiritualism as a religion…

Spiritualism is a religion that embodies the main ideas of all
religions, that there is a life after death, immortality and the existence of a
God.

“The aim of Spiritualism is to effect an at-one-ment and unison
of Humanity with God until every action and thought of Humanity is in perfect
harmony with the Divine Will.

(Adapted from the Spiritualists’ Lyceum Manual)

One difference between Spiritualism and other religions is the
acceptance of the ability, through mediumship, to offer evidence of spirit
communication to a recipient and in doing so demonstrate that people survive
physical death. The individual may decide if they have received sufficient
evidence to give them personal proof that people survive death as individuals
in Spirit. Where personally proven it provides conclusive evidence of the 4th
Principle, ‘The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul’.

Mediumship and the evidence is just the key to a door to encourage
further study and understanding, the message is not the goal of Spiritualism.
It is what an individual chooses to do with that key once they have it, once
they accept that we survive death and continue on in the unbroken cycle of
eternal life of spirit that forms the purpose of Spiritualism.

Spiritualism becomes the study of this earthly life’s purpose as Spirit
here and now and as such empowers anyone to take charge of the development of
their own Spirituality, continually aiming to progress and live life with a
fuller understanding and a greater learning experience for the Spirit.

Spiritualism is a universal religion, one focus of which is embodied in
our 5th Principle, ‘Personal Responsibility’. It is by our own free will we may
chose to live a better life here and now reflected by how we live. It is by our
own will and choices in how we act react and interact with everyone and
everything that we must each be solely responsible and accountable. In understanding
and accepting this, we accept our 6th Principle of ‘Compensation and
Retribution’ encompassing the universal and natural law of cause and effect.

It is through personal experience and expression by the study,
consideration and application of the many aspects of the religion, philosophy
and science of Spiritualism that the Spiritualist gains understanding and
Spiritual growth. No one person has all the answers and Spiritualism becomes a
continual personal religion to be lived, to nurture and enlighten the Spirit
within us, here and now.

Those who are at the helm of the
main Spiritual organisations should ask these questions, before they vote on
changes.  ”What does Spirit think?  How
would Spirit act in such a situation
?”
If mediums on church platforms are
working with Spirit, should it not be the same for those on various committees?

For the title Spiritualist Church to be above the door,
surely all that is connected with Spiritualism
the Religion
must be there at hand for those who enter.  The full package and not “Those who attend, are not here for the
address”.
To be part of Spiritualism the Religion there
has to be a Divine Service.  Of course
there can be a separate evening of Clairvoyance but without a regular Divine Service
how can that gathering be part of a religion?

Ego – the biggest threat to Spiritualism.  Whether it is one sitting on an influential
committee, a small church committee, medium, healer, in fact anything where one
is face to face with the public as a representative of our religion, one must take
the responsibility seriously.  We owe it
to our religion and to the early pioneers who suffered a lot of personal
hardship to get Spiritualism accepted.

 The
Medium
– If taking on church work, must
realise he/she is representing a religion – not themselves.  That they have a great responsibility on
their shoulders in representing Spiritualism
the Religion.
We should think also “Are we letting the pioneers of Spiritualism
down?”
Also mediums have responsibility for the results of their actions
and words.

 Charity
Nights-
are part and parcel of Spiritualism but we must be careful the
tail does not wag the dog.  In the past year
or so such nights have seemed to snowball and it is as if there can be almost
as many charity nights as church services.
I remember listening to an old medium many years ago discussing charity
nights.  He said that two charity nights per
church per year would enhance our Religion and the church with the local
community, especially if the nights were for local charities.  He also went on to say that too many such
nights would lessen the impact of these nights as being special. There may also
be Mediums who wish to arrange a charity night for a cause close to their heart
and that is understandable.   But when we have a charity circuit that is
also competing with our churches then we have to at least take a look at the
situation. Who runs this night and where, should also be up for discussion.  Better a church or as I have mentioned, a
medium rather than a charity themselves.
Also better to have the charity night on church premises.  But if that is not large enough to
accommodate the special night then care should surely be taken for the
venue.  A charity night in a pub or club
does Spiritualism the Religion no favours,
even if no drinks are served during the actual clairvoyance. I say this looking
at it from the general public’s side.

For example, I heard of a young couple
who had lost their son when he was only a few months old.  Over the following year their grief
intensified and they felt they would never get over the little one’s passing.  One night they visited a Spiritualist Church
and the pair were astounded by the good evidence surrounding both sides of their
families in spirit, and they got a message about their son.  The grief was still there but it had lifted a
little.  That was until a few weeks later;
the pair were passing a pub and saw a flyer in the window.  The Medium that gave such wonderful evidence
was appearing at the venue for a night of clairvoyance.  It would have been a night in aid of a
charity but the couple did not notice anymore than the name of the Medium.  Their first thoughts were “Is all this just a game, for fun all part of entertainment and we
took it seriously?”
The message they
had received in the church was good, was accurate for all that I heard about
it.  The Medium was sincere in working
with Spirit that night of the service.  But
the venue of the pub cancelled most if not all of that out a few weeks later.

The entertainment side is I feel, partly fuelled by mediums appearing
in theatres like other forms of entertainment.
Their name brightly shining in lights outside of theatres must certainly
confuse some people. Tickets can be expensive and I wonder if any/all celebrity
mediums give a percentage of the takings to a small churches in the area, who’s
numbers will have dropped that night because of his/her appearance.  But should not churches take more
responsibility for Spiritualism the Reliligion and not book mediums for Divine
Services who go down the theatre path?

In relating back to what the
general public think of us.  Another
story I heard was about an elderly lady who had lost her husband and had not
much ready cash.  She felt that the
brighter the lights the better the medium.
So she borrowed money for a
ticket, not realising in her grief, that only a few of the several hundred attending
would get a message.  The outcome was
that she did not get a message and now she was in debt.  Should we not be trying to educate the public
a little more about what we are about?
This widow could have went along to her local church, her only cost
would have been a free will offering and then it was up to Spirit if there was
a message for the old soul or not.

So many people today want to
understand their psychic abilities and that is an area that our churches seem
to neglect. Most of what is on offer, in our churches, is all about platform
work.   Many on their spiritual journey
turn to what is on offer outside our churches and attend anything and
everything.   There is so much out there
that one wonders what is manmade and what is from Spirit?   The mentality these days is: the more it
costs the better it must be. Or if the person taking the session has indicated
they have trained under a ‘big name’ in the psychic world, then they must be
good.  One can sit through a workshop
with someone but that does not mean one has excelled.

 Certificates are on offer with
many courses and workshops but what clout does such a certificate have?  The S.N.U. and some other Spiritual organisations,
have well established education programmes, and it’s generally regarded that
their certified students have achieved a particulate standard.  But there are other Spiritual organisations
and individuals who give out certificates, which are only recognised by the
issuing group/ individual.   Many of
these certificates are for attending so what does that tell us?  I have several certificates from criminology
classes that I have attended at college.
But that says nothing about how much I learned and more about my
attendance.

 Speaking to a well respected
elderly medium recently she said the she was taught to “give in the service of Spirit” rather than always looking to
receive.  Maybe we should make this a
priority and get back to that way of thinking for those who tread the platforms
of our churches.

One of the biggest areas I feel
that Spiritualism should make much more effort is Pastoral Care.   Many are turning towards our churches for
assistance these days and we should have some form of system in place to help
them.  If someone asks for help, no
matter what that help may be, if we cannot help, then we should be readily
equipped to pass them on to a suitable organisation.   At one
time it was the ‘awareness of spirit’
that would be the main reason for someone contacting our churches, not in these
troubled times; it can be almost anything that troubles an individual that
makes them contact us.  No matter the
problem the individual has contacted us about because we are flying under the
banner of ‘church’ or ‘religion’.
They have chosen us before any other church/religion so it is up to us to play our part.  No matter how strange a person’s story may
sound over the phone they should not be dismissed and we should take time to
sort things out or to get help from another direction for them.

                                             …The Snowdrop…..

The snowdrops remind me of a story a friend told me a few years ago. She
was recovering from a serious
Illness and looking out of her window one morning she saw her first
snowdrops of the year. Only four, but

It gave her so much pleasure as she was feeling sorry for herself that
morning.

All of a sudden a neighbour’s little girl appeared in her garden and
started to pick the snowdrops. Anne opened the door and shouted to the girl to
come back then told her off for picking the flowers. She was floored by the
little girl’s explanation. “I only took one and it was for my Nan who I am
going to visit in hospital this afternoon, and I left 2p on your doorstep step
for the flower.”
As Anne looked down, there were three snowdrops still
blowing in the wind and two-pence on the doorstep

A Parting Gift…. Sound Advice… A Young lad Contradicts a Medium….Red and Purple Poppies…

20th November – I had only a short trip up the road
at ASK Neilston.  A church that is well
supported by the community
21st – Again another short trip in the
opposite direction, south this time to the Temple of Light Spiritualist Church
in Kilwinning.

26th I was off to the Pollockshaws and
District Spiritualist Church, Langside Halls, Shawlands, Glasgow.  This is a well established church that has
helped so many people over the years.
Recently numbers have been dropping because of rumours that the church
had closed.  This church has no intention
of closing and apart from a two week festive break.   Its doors will open in early January to
welcome all who wish to attend.

27th I was taking a workshop at the Milngavie and
Bearsden Spiritualist Sanctuary…This Sanctuary
only opened in August is already part of the community.  Not only was there a good turnout at the
workshop but all those who attended were very enthusiastic and talented.

28th –
Taking part in a Psychometry Experiment.
Still waiting on the final results but early reports show that the
evidence given was accurate.

29th – It
was a welcome return to ASK Dreghorn.

30th – The
Angel Light Spiritualist Church This is another church which could do with some
support.  So if you are in the area and
have some free time on a Friday evening at 7.30 then why not drop into the
Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre, Daisy Street Govanhill, Glasgow. G42 8JL.  Close to Victoria Road.

1st
December – Still not travelling too far from home I was at The Ayr Spiritualist
Centre.

6th –
Landside Spiritualist Church, Langside Halls.

9th – The
Friendship of Love and Light, Foxbar, Paisley.
Founded by one of the most popular mediums in West Central Scotland,
Eddie Docherty.  Sadly Eddie past in 2006
but the church still is run  in true
Eddie Docherty tradition of being a place where love, comfort and help is
always available.

10th –
Taking part in a debate “Can Spiritualism be Taken Seriously?”

13th – My
last service of the year at Carluke Spiritualist Church.

I was giving a talk on Spiritualism
when an elderly lady said that she was saddened that so many people were being
cremated today.  “With cremation there is nowhere for family and friends to go to pay a
little respect when one feels the need too.
When there is a plot in a cemetery one can go and stand for a few minutes
in thought about the deceased, and in taking a bunch of flowers one can
brighten up their last resting place.

I could see where the old soul was
coming from.  Although one can have a
rose bush or a tree planted in the crematorium grounds with a little plaque of
the name of the deceased, to many it is not the same as having a grave stone
and a plot in a cemetery.  There are
those who will plant a tree or a bush in their garden in memory of a loved one
something they can look out on every day.
It is all down to personal preference but it can cause a lot of strife
in families.

Somewhere to go, something to look at
in memory of a loved one can take many forms… here is a novel way that we
could all think about and maybe use our own version as far as remembering a
loved one is concerned.

Stephanie and Josephine had been good
friends for many years and when Josephine had been diagnosed with a terminal
illness she gave the lovely candle holder pictured above to Stephanie.  A lovely gift in normal times but with Josephine
being so ill – what a better gift to be exchanged between friends.

Although Stephanie treasured the
lovely gift from her close friend, after Josephine’s passing it took on much
more significance.  In all her suffering Josephine
took time to seek out a gift for a good friend.
Not only a gift for her good friend – but a special gift – a gift with
such lovely words that would be coming from Josephine’s heart.  The gift has pride and place in Stephanie’s
house, always noticeable when anyone walks into the lounge.  Josephine’s light shone in this life and the
love that she put into selecting this gift still shines on when a candle is lit
in the holder Stephanie is sure that her good friend draws close.

                          …………Sound
Advice……….

What is the best advdvice I could
offer to a fledgling about to set foot on the platform for the first time?  The same advice I was given many years
ago.   This was not from a medium but
from two elderly ladies who were members of our church.  Neither ever claimed to have heighted psychic
abilities but both had their finger on the pulse as far as Spiritualism – the
religion was concerned.  In fact their
advice started almost as soon as I started attending the church.

It was either my first or second visit
to the church they said “Don’t look on
this as the paranormal, all this is natural. It is not us that are strange; it
is those outside who are not aware of what is around them”.
I nearly burst out laughing at this but they
were genuine and sincere so I decided to have an open mind and give spiritualism
a chance

Right from the start they seemed to
have this crazy notion that I would end up on the platform of a spiritualist
church.   As far as I was concerned there
was absolutely no chance of that every happening.   At that time I had absolutely no confidence,
I felt I had no psychic abilities and I had no ambition to be a medium.

During my early days in spiritualism I
would sit right at the back of the church behind a large cheese plant.  But this did not keep me hidden from the
mediums as I constantly got a message from spirit.    These messages contained good information
that could certainly point to a strong possibility of life after death.  But…
I could always dilute this strong possibility before I got home.  The
medium had read my mind, being able to detect memories stored in my brain from
the past.  Or I may just have mentioned
something about the incident and the person coming forward from spirit before
the service.
And then there was the firewall
that no medium’s message every got past
it was not in my script which I felt each family member might give me as
evidence that it was them.

Then one night I was impressed by a
medium, a young medium wearing a green dress – the reason for me mentioning the
dress will become apparent in a moment.
The two old dears must have noticed less of a scowl on my face after the
service.    They came up to me and said “You were impressed by that young lady this
evening”.
I had to admit I was, but
not with the message she gave me although that was impressive, I was more taken
by her address. An address that made so much fall into place as far as
spiritualism was concerned.

The two old souls thinking it was the
clairvoyance then came out with – “Just
imagine her taking off that lovely green dress”.
I was amazed at this comment and hoping
others around us would not hear our conversation about the young medium
undressing.  And horrified as to what
they would come out with next.  But what
they said could be the best advice given to any spiritualist medium.

“Just imaging that young lass change out of that dress and into
a football strip.  She plays a game of
football and scores three goals.
Everyone will be praising her, but for any player to score three goals
they must be part of a team.  This young
lady was part of a team tonight – she had her spirit guides and helpers with
her.

A football team has a crowd cheering them on.  This young lady tonight did not have a crowd
cheering her on – but she had a congregation sending out a lot of love to her.

So remember when you are on the platform you are only part of a
team. And when you think the service has went well, be proud, pat yourself on
the back, but also give praise to all connected with the good link with spirit”

Those words I have never forgotten and
after every service I always say

“Thank you…

Remember this is always team work…

You – the congregation – send your love to spirit…

Spirit – sends their love back…

And hopefully the medium gets the interpretation of the
information spirit is sending correct…

I hope  that this is what
you have experienced this evening.

Then one night they said “Every time you stand up on the platform take
a deep breath, look at the congregation and think to yourself – there will be
many in the congregation that will have a stronger link with spirit than you
will ever have.  They will have close
ties with spirit in their everyday lives, working in all areas of the
community, the care profession just being one”.

I am ashamed to say I could have
screamed that night “I know, I know that
there will be countless people have a much stronger link with spirit than I
will ever have.  I will never appear on
the platform, I have never any ambition to appear on the platform”.

But these two ladies were right and
their comments above are something I have always taken on board and think of
their words every time I appear on the platform.

There were many more words of wisdom from these ladies…

“Whenever you step on the platform and you have no nerves in the
pit of your stomach just think, Spirit could be on strike that evening or there
is a public holiday in the spirit world”.

This was not meant as a joke maybe
more of a warning to keep one’s ego intact.

I don’t think there are any better words of wisdom to help a medium about to
step on the platform for the first time and also throughout their years serving
spirit…

Vince emails –“Ever since I was a
small boy I always thought that the worst time to die was around Christmas and
the New Year as for that family of the deceased the festive period would never
be the same again.   What are your
thoughts on this?

Vince your email reminds me of an incident at a spiritualist church almost
twenty years ago.  A medium said in her
address said roughly what you mentioned in your email.  A 11-year-old lad took exception to
this and shocked the congregation by making his thoughts known.  He said that five years before his father had
died on the first day of the school summer holidays and the young lad always
dreaded the break from school in the summer.
It was the same at Christmas.  “So I dread both summer and Christmas” said
the young man.  The medium and chairwoman
were not too pleased at the interruption but I could see where the young man
was coming from and I am sure most of the congregation did also.

We will always connect something with the passing of a loved-one   one lady’s mother passed on the 6th
of April and when the 6th of any month comes around the daughter has
an off day.    One chap said to me that
he his dad was over his time because he had suffered so much the last two years
of his life and could do nothing for himself.
So there was no real grieving when the old soul passed.  Also no grieving at the anniversary of his
passing each year.  But the son said
there was always a tear in his eye on the day of the Ayr Gold Cup as that was
his dad’s special day of the year, the only day in the year when he went to the
races.

There are those who will say “It
must be great to be a spiritualist as you will not go through the grieving
process.  You believe your loved ones
live on and there can be communication with them”.
Alas that is far from the truth.  Even though we believe we are only human and
we can grieve as long as or even longer than those who don’t believe in life
after death.

No matter how long we are in this life we will always have memories of
loved ones that have passed on before us.
I am sure those in spirit would prefer us to have happy memories instead
of sad ones.  Instead of those memories
dwelling on the time of the passing which may have been a traumatic time, think
back to a happy moment you enjoyed with them.

A mistake in my last blog meant that I put the wrong comments under the
title “Red and Purple Poppies”.  So here
it is now….

Colin asks – “I saw several people
wearing a purple poppy on their lapel alongside a red one.  Has the purple poppy got anything to do with
Spiritualism?”

The purple poppy has been issued
by Animal Aid to commemorate all animal victims of war.  This is not meant to be an alternative to the
traditional red poppy, as the two can
be worn side by side as a reminder that both humans and animals – have been –
and continue to be victims of war.

During human conflicts animals have been used as messengers, for
detection, scouting and rescue, as beasts of burden and on the frontline.  They have been used for companionship in the
trenches and continue to be used for horrific warfare experiments in Labourites.

I must admit I did not know about “The
Purple Poppy”
till I checked after receiving Colin’s email.  Next year I will be wearing both red and
purple poppies.

….

Latest on the poem page is a poem
a little girl gave to her grandmother the other day.  Only a few lines but
the words show the love this young lady has for her grandmother…
                                                                          ….
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all that have contributed to
this site in 2012.  Also those who have
looked into the site I hope that you got some benefit from it.

Spiritualism – A Simple Religion…. Farm or Factory… .The Purple Poppy… I Want – I Want… Quote from Anne Frank… A Life to Live by Barbara Willson…

31st October I took the service at the
Paisley Spiritualist Church, Glenburn, Paisley…
November 1st my allergy played up again
and I had to cancel the Johnstone Spiritualist Church.
3rd – Yes – a Spiritual service on a
Saturday evening – at the Falkirk Spiritualist Church (SNU).  Only two churches I know hold services on a
Saturday evening, Falkirk and Dumfries and both are always busy.
4th – It was the busy afternoon service
at the Largs Spiritualist Church.
7th – The White Rose Spiritualist Church,
Gourock…
8th –  Balloch Spiritualist Church…
11th – Saw my furthest trip of the month
so far to the Kirkcaldy Spiritualist Centre (SNU)
12th – It was an evening of clairvoyance
at the Kilmarnock Spiritualist Church. (SNU)
17th – I took a workshop at the Perth
Spiritualist Church (SNU).  I was
impressed by the ability and knowledge of those attending.

Spiritualism is a simple religion, a
religion that is different from so many other mainstream religions.  The difference stretches much further than
the clairvoyance side of things.  Most
mainstream religions have ancient holy books which contains countless thousands
of words.  One holy book has over 700,000
words.  They include historical narrative: stories about historical
people and events.  Poems or songs:
lyrics, songs, and prayers that express emotions and ideas using distinctive
language, literary styles, and rhythm.
Prophecy: poetic messages conveying divine blessing or judgment on
people and calling for a response Letters: written by one or more individuals
to others, often addressing specific issues.
Proverbs and wisdom literature: pithy sayings or discourses about living
life well and making wise choices.  Legal
codes: laws, both general and specific, for ordering a just society.  Parables: imaginative stories that are true
to life and illustrate a point.
Apocalyptic literature: vivid portrayal of the cosmic battle between
good and evil.

But spiritualism has only Seven Principles; –

 1.   The Fatherhood of
God.
2.
The Brotherhood of Man.
3.
The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels.
4.
The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul.
5.
Personal Responsibility.
6.
Compensation and Retribution hereafter for all the Good and Evil deeds
done on earth.
7.
Eternal Progress open to every Human Soul.
As a retired clergyman said to me recently, “The more words in a holy book the more
ammunition there is to be turned against that religion.  Those inside the religion may manipulate the
holy words to suit their own agenda, and outsiders use these words as
ammunition to ridicule that particular religion.

It is no use having Seven Principles of forty-seven
words if they do not make sense.  In my
opinion the Seven Principles make a lot of sense and we can use them in our
everyday life to make Spiritualism more than a religion but a way of life.

The Fifth Principle –“Personal Responsibility” was not only the first one that was of
interest to me, the elderly clergyman remarked on this as well.  If we all took a bit more ‘personal responsibility’ then the world
would be a better place.  I have always
thought there should be an Eighth Principle and that should be ‘common sense’.  ‘Common
Sense’
added to ‘Personal
Responsibility
’ would make us all better human beings.

One of my earliest memories was
getting for Christmas was a few toy farm animals, made from metal not like the
plastic ones today. As I played with these small toys regularly the following
Christmas, too big for my stocking but Christmas present from Santa just the
same, was a large wooden farmyard.  This
was my pride and joy for many years.  So
it may come as no surprise that one of my favourite programmes of all time was the
BBC’s“All Creatures Great and Small”.
Later in life my work took me around
farms which I always found enjoyable.

But word ‘farm’ is being abused these days.
We see the word ‘farm’ being used for areas which can keep up to 500
dairy cattle which never get out into a field.
Massive numbers of farm animals never see the light of day or breathe in
fresh air.  I will not go into the
horrors of factory farming but surely as spiritualists we can do something
about it?

The first thing we can do is include
animals treated in such a way in our prayers.
Then if one wishes to write to their local supermarket asking about
their animal welfare policy.   The more
letters a big business receives from compassionate and caring customers to how  animals are treated before its flesh appears
on supermarket shelves, the more notice will be taken in supermarket board
rooms.

Next year…

Wear a red and purole poppy…

Massive numbers of farm animals never see the light of day or breathe in
fresh air.  I will not go into the
horrors of factory farming but surely as spiritualists we can do something
about it?
The first thing we can do is include

rooms.

 I WANT … I WANT … I WANT…

Every day you hear people saying what they
want.  Well, this is what I want.

I want people who are sick to be
healed…

I want children with no families to be
adopted…

I want people never to worry about
food and shelter and heat…

Most of all I would like to see people
start to care for each other…

Jenny Lafferty 1949 – 2012…We can learn plenty from the Crow Tribe…. 150 Years by Jim Brown…

14th October – I was taking the service at the Perth Spiritualist
Church.  (SNU)   A small but busy church in the centre of the
town.

16th – ASK Cumbernauld and as usual almost every seat taken.

17th – It was unfortunate that I had to cancel my trip to
Stranaer because of a hospital appointment.

21st I only had a short
journey to Kilmarnock Spiritualist Church (SNU)
Founded
in 1936 this church has long been a place of welcome, support and learning for
all those who have entered its doors .  A quote from the church’s  website “We offer an open door to all who wish
to enter and hope the saying “…there are no strangers here, only friends who
have yet to meet” holds true for all who do.
The church is only a short distance from the
A77.

23rd… My diary had down the Cambuslang Spiritualist Church
but because of refurbishment of its original hall this church has moved to the
Fernhill Community Centre, 12 Auchenlarie Drive, Fernhill, and Glasgow, G73 4EQ.  The church is slowly but surely
finding its feet in the area.

25th – A full house at The Lighthouse Spiritualist Church
Greenock.   A sad night as it had only
been four days since the passing of founder and president of this church,  Jenny Lafferty.  More about Jenny later

27th I was at the Edinburgh College of Parapsychology for an
evening of clairvoyance.

29th Because of a nasty allergy that will just not go away I
had to cancel the Lamb’s Hill Spiritualist Church, Glasgow.

Jenny Lafferty founder and President of the Lighthouse Spiritualist Church passed to spirit on 21st October 2012.
Jenny Lafferty was well known and respected in the Spiritualist
movement in Scotland.  She was in poor
health for several years but seldom if ever moaned about her own
condition.  She was always thinking of
the plight of others and could always find something nice to say about those
who she disagreed with or those who gave her a hard time.

Jenny served as booking secretary at the White Rose
Spiritualist Church in Gourock for sixteen years and then after a break she
opened the Lighthouse Spiritualist Church with a few of her dedicated Spiritualist
friends.  This was not just to be the
opening of another Spiritualist Church, renting a hall and booking
mediums.  Jenny and her committee meant
this church to be part of the community, to be there for those in the community
who needed a little help etc.  And that
Spiritual Healing was to play as important a part as the clairvoyance.  From the first service at the church has gone
from strength to strength.

The passing of Jenny’s daughter earlier this year
hit her hard and although we spiritualists know that is not the end for a loved
one, we are only human and can grieve as much as those who don’t believe.  To Jenny; Spiritualism was not just her
religion but a way of life.

Jenny will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

The
North American indigenous people were much maligned by Hollywood’s western
movies. The
indigenous peoples of North American were very spiritual in their own way.  Their beliefs have a strong reverence for
animal life, the environment, and each other.

Organized religious meetings are not a part of
Native American spirituality.  History
shows that originally, Native American spirituality was more of a way of daily
life.  Just like many in Spiritualism
today who consider Spiritualism is a way of life for them and not a
religion.  History books show us that the
white man viewed Native American spirituality to be nothing more than superstition.
Yet maybe we in Spiritualism and society
as a whole could learn a lot for the customs and beliefs of the Indigenous North
American tribes.

One in particular, the Crow Tribe, has interested a
friend of mine.

The Crow Indians were a little
different from most of the other tribes in that women often played very
important roles within their tribal community. Descendants for various roles in
the family and tribal community come from the women. And when they got married,
it was the male Crow Indians that accommodated the women and moved in with her
and her family. Females within the Crow Indian tribe could even be chief.

Human life with the natural kingdom
around them.  They said there was a
mother goddess and a father god and believed in holy communion they were not
predominantly patriarchs or matriarchs .they were warriors but believed in necessity
they were great hunters and gatherers … in all actuality the order of the Crow
is of most ancient origin and means that together we can face all obstacles and
challenges an live in peace and prosperity.
The Crow Indians were simple pagans they believed in the natural
organics of life and the balances of you already possess
everything necessary to become great. –

Jim and May Brown may no longer grace the platforms of our Spiritualist Churches but that does not mean the necomers to our movement should miss out on the wise words of Jim’s addresses…
150Years ago                               28/11/2003

In the past
few hundred years this physical world has received a lot of signals such as
rapping’s that have come from the spirit world but unfortunately, they were
never picked up by the people of this world.

This may
have been because they were afraid or perhaps it was just because they didn’t
understand that they could communicate with spirit.
For
instance it is recorded that there were rapping sounds heard in 1716, in the
home of John Wesley the founder of the Methodist religion at Epworth Vicarage
in England.

These
sounds were similar to the rapping’s at Hydesville,
New York State which started the
Spiritualist Movement.
Throughout
the centuries all the different religions of this physical world did speak of
another life in what was then believed to be the ‘hereafter’.
Although
they were unable to give any definite proof that such a place did exist.

It wasn’t
until about 1847 after centuries of what was at that time known as supernatural
happenings that we became aware of spirit through the antics of two young girls
and that the first two-way
communications with Spirit were received.
It was only
through these early messages that we became more certain that we lived after
the death of the physical body and we learned from spirit that we would survive
in another dimension known now as the spirit world.

Time has
passed since these first communications, until once again we have in this
modern age rediscovered the ability through mediumship to communicate with the
people who have passed into the spirit world.
For in the
centuries before 1847 it was not uncommon for spirit contact to be made and you
only have to read in some the ancient records such as the Bible of spirit
communication between the people of this world and the people of the spirit
world.

Today there
are many people who can make this contact, and it’s through them and the
information they have been given from spirit teachers that we have learned
about spiritual philosophy and spiritual religion.
These
spiritual teachings have told us how we should behave towards each other and
how we should live our lives here on this earth.

If we allow
ourselves to be brought under the influence of Spirit we will begin to
understand the truth of the Spirit messages and allow that truth to change our
attitudes, and our sense of what is right, and what is wrong.
Those of us
who have already been influenced by Spirit and are sincere in our thoughts and
actions can see what has been accomplished since the first communication was
received and message from Spirit is that there is a need for more people of
earth to have faith and belief in spirit.

We can now realise what can be accomplished in the days that lie ahead,
for the message from Spirit is that there is a need for more people to act as
instruments for Spirit, instruments that will have perfect faith in the power
of Spirit to guide and inspire them so that others may benefit.
Those who allow
themselves to come under the influence of Spirit and to go forward in this work
needs to apply the Spiritual truths they will have learned to their everyday
life so that other people who they come in contact with will recognize that
they are messengers of Spirit by the type of life that they live.

In this short
address, I hope I have managed to convey to you the message of the Spirit
Guides. Which is to consider other people and to freely give of your love and
service to them
?

SPIRITUALIST OF THE YEAR GOES AGAINST OUR RELIGION….SPIRITUALISM AND REMBERANCE DAY SERVICES AT THE CENOTHAPH… GIVE MEDIUMS FROM THE HIGHLANDS A CHANCE…PSYCHIC ABILITIES – START OF WITH THE BASICS…

24 th September saw me driving the short distance
to Kilmarnock Spiritualist Church (SNU) for an evening of clairvoyance.  This church has its own premises and is a
stalwart in promoting spiritualism with its excellent workshops etc.  Anyone interested in learning more about
spiritualism and their own psychic abilities should keep an eye on this
church’s website for forthcoming events
.
27th I was heading north and east to the
Arbroath Spiritualist Centre.  (SNU)
30th I t was my first visit to the Milngavie and Bearsden Spiritualist Sanctuary.   Although
the sanctuary only opened its doors a few weeks ago it is already a firm
favourite with the local community.  This
new spiritual venture has its Divine Service on a Sunday afternoon, like Largs
Spiritualist Church (SNU). These are the only two Spiritual services I know
which take place on Sunday afternoons and as both are well attended, so it may
be worthwhile other churches thinking of a Sunday afternoon service.
The sanctuary veers away slightly from our normal service with no opening
prayer.  In its place it has five minutes
of contemplation which gives us our own personal space to link with God, our
loved ones in Spirit, or just to reflect on our week. Not something I would
have done if I had a church of my own but I must say that I was impressed  as each minute of the ‘time for reflection
passed’ I could feel the atmosphere getting stronger and spirit drawing close.
But not only that – this Sanctuary has taken another bold step which I will
comment on later in the blog.
1st October I was heading north to the well supported
Inverneness Spiritualist Church, Smithton Halls.  (SNU)
The interest in spiritualism has been growing for many years now and I
am impressed by the enthusiasm for our religion in this area.  I have another comment to make about this
enthusiasm later in the blog…
5th – 9th I was at the Glasgow Association of
Spiritualists. (SNU)  There was a big
turnout at the Awareness Group on the Friday evening and all four services were
well attended.

SPIRITUALIST OF THE YEAR GOES AGAINST OUR RELIGION….

The new Psychic News will
receive many letters and it will be impossible to print them all.  I sent in a letter a few weeks ago and it was
not printed, maybe because of the limited space or because I was criticising the
magazine.

Here is the letter: –

Dear PN,

I am shocked that the New Psychic News revised Spiritualist
of the Year.

No disrespect to this year’s winner, Mr. Eric Hatton,
but surely by reviving such a thing, goes against all that Spiritualism stands
for?  I thought that we were all equal in
the eyes of God and Spirit?  That we are
all going along our own spiritual path as best we can.  To pick one in front of another is not what
we preach from the platform, so why do we not practice what we preach?

I believe the biggest danger to Spiritualism as a religion
these days is that many look on it as entertainment.  Look how the entertainment industry has an
award for almost everything.  Well, we
certainly are going down the entertainment path with this award.

How long before we have a televised “Spiritual Medium
of the Year” and if we are going to go down that trail we cannot leave out our
Healers and have a televised “Spiritual Healer of the Year” also.  The next step would be the “X- Factor” for
fledgling mediums to show their talents to the viewers.

We are already playing into the hands of our critics
as more and more mediums names go up in lights outside of theatres.  We are only shooting ourselves in the foot
with this award.  What other religion has
such an award?  If we continue in this
direction we will be leaving religion behind and entering the world of
entertainment.

I wonder what Spirit has thought of all this?  Has anyone thought to ask them?

Tom Johnston.

SPIRITUALISM AND REMBERANCE DAY SERVICES AT THE CENOTHAPH…

Since I have come into
spiritualism I have constantly heard the comments “
We are never part of the official parade on Rembrance Day”.

Laying a wreath at the Cenotaph
on Remembrance Sunday in Whitehall has for a long time been an issue between
the SNU and the British Government, considering that other major UK religious
denominations are represented at the annual national service of remembrance.  More about this in my next blog…

But I have often wondered at a
local level why our churches do not take part in remembrance Day Services.   Stirling Spiritualist Church has taken part
in the local Remembrance Service for many years now and on asking Stirling’s
President  how this came about,  I was told the church was invited to take
part.  There will be other Spiritualist
churches scattered about the country which also take part.  But if we are not invited then we should we
not ask  to be part of this service?  I know of one church who asked to be involved
and were turned down, the reason for that being they were late in applying or
permission for that particular year.  I
don’t know if they asked to be part of the ceremony the following year.

But this year the Milngavie and Bearsden
Spiritualist Sanctuary
which has only had its doors open for a few
weeks will be laying a wreath at the Milngavie Precinct
at the Remembrance Ceremony.    Maybe at local level we Spiritualist have
been complaining rather than asking?
Maybe we have lacked the determination of the pioneers of modern-day.

GIVE MEDIUMS FROM THE HIGHLANDS A CHANCE…

In the past and even today, churches
in the north of the country have had to rely on mediums from the central belt
of Scotland to take many of their services.
That means on most occasions an overnight stay at cost to the church and
there is also travelling expenses.  With
the enthusiasm in that area for several years many excellent mediums are coming
on the scene in our northern regions.  But
they seldom seemed to get asked to take services in the central belt.  That may be because in the central and
southern areas Scotland we’ve always had a plentiful supply of mediums on our doorstep
and the churches have not thought of looking north.  Yes, it will add to the expenses with the
medium travelling further and could entail a night in a B&B, but the
churches in the north have coped with this on a regular basis for years so it
should not be beyond the purse strings of many churches further south.  After all we have visiting mediums from
England and Northern Ireland.

PSYCHIC ABILITIES – START OF WITH THE BASICS…

Bernard emails
It seems as if everyone wants to be
mediums these days.  Soon the platforms
will be full with only one or two sitting in the pews”.

Hi Bernard, I
can see where you are coming from but let’s look at it another way.  More and more people are becoming aware of spiritualism
these days and realizing that we all have some degree of psychic ability.  They are drawn to open-circles and workshops
to try to understand and develop these abilities.  That I find encouraging.

But… many of
these open-circles and workshops are geared to platform work and sittings
instead of starting off with the basics.
First we have to understand what
these abilities are and slowly building on this, as we do with any learning
process.  But at the moment a great many
of these development circles and workshop seem to start at primary 7 instead of
in the infant class.

These days it
is not uncommon for anyone showing any ability to be pushed on to the platform
of a church or at a charity night at a very early stage in their
development.  This is usually detrimental
to the pupil’s development and on many occasions to the person getting the
message.

To give you a
few examples of this to try and explain it from all angles;

A mother was
happy that her daughter decided to join a group at a small church because she
knew from an early age her daughter had psychic abilities.  All went well for six months; the young lady
was developing well and becoming much more confident in her everyday life.  Instead of feeling different from others around
her she was slowly starting to understand why she had felt this way.  Then one night the medium’s car broke down
and he could not get to the church on time.
The young lady and another circle member of limited circle experience
were told they were taking the service and were pushed on the platform.  According to the mother the night was
disastrous in every way for the two young ladies.  Neither has gone back to the church or any
church since.  This should not have
happened and would not have happened if those in charge of the church had acted
as they should have and shown a little common sense.

Another case
where a young gentleman is very talented and sensible.  He realises he has a lot to learn as he goes quietly
along his spiritual path having no plans for the platform.  In fact no plans to stand on the platform for
many years yet, as in the next two years he is expecting promotion at work and hoping
to start a family.  He is happy to sit in
what many would call an old fashioned church circle where development takes at
a slow pace.  Yet some are to trying to
‘poach’ him away from his circle to take part in charity nights or church work.  Luckily this young man has his head screwed
on the right way and is standing his ground, refusing to give way to the
pressure.

But there are
two sides to this as there are also many who want after a few months the
glamour of being on the platform, taking part in a charity nights or the
lucrative side of private sittings and psychic parties.

How long does
it take for a medium to be the finished article?  How long is a piece of string?  It depends on the training and the time the
person has to give to his or her development.
Some mediums have said that they sat in circle for sixteen years before
they were asked to take the platform.
Many will say this is far too long and in most cases I will agree with
them.  In the past there were fewer
opportunities so one may have had to wait till a medium retired from the
circuit or passed over before a place became vacant.

I feel that
more responsibility should be taken by those taking development circles and
workshops.  There should be many more opportunities
for those who just want to understand their psychic abilities and how they can
affect their everyday lives.  This to be
before and separate from platform training.

Whoever is
taking the workshop has a lot of responsibility on their shoulders.  As ‘psychic’ means sensitive and there will
be a lot of sensitive people relying on them to put them gently on the right
path, not to force march them into areas they are not ready for.

But there are
those as I have said earlier who see a lucrative market in jumping on the
‘spiritualist bandwagon’.  This is where
spiritualist churches, centres etc that are true to their religion should be
strong and make sure that those who take their services look on spiritualism as
a religion first and foremost.

Great Evidence of Life After Death – But? ….Through the Eyes of a Donkey… Wise Words from CarolynCrockart….

·
1st September
saw me taking the 5th of my six workshops at the Glasgow Association
of Spiritualists, Somerset Place, Glasgow.
Health reasons was the cause of three enthusiastic regulars not being
able to attend, but two equally enthusiastic newcomers helped to make it a very
interesting and successful afternoon.

·
2nd… It was
over the Kincardine Bridge to the Kingdom of Fife to the Dunfermline
Spiritualist Church.  This church has its
own premises at 3 Lady Campbell’s Walk, Dunfermline, KY12 0TL.  As well as their
Divine Service at 6pm on Sundays there is also a Healing Service from 11am to
12.30pm on Monday.

·
Missing from
the church these days isWilliam
Stenhouse a grand old gentleman of Spiritualism who has been serving Spirit and
his church for over 60-years. Such dedication could not go unnoticed, and it
was with great pleasure the church hosted an evening in 2009 where William was
presented with a long service award to Spiritualism by John Weir Past President
of the Spiritualists’ National Union’s Scottish and Irish District Council. At
that same ceremony a brass plaque was placed in the church to honour the memory
of Elizabeth McDonald and to commemorate the sixty-years of dedication to the

church. This church has been blessed to have two such long service and loyal
members. William, now ninety-one, rarely missed a service up until recently and
was a dedicated healer for a number of years. President Evelyn Izatt and the
committee still keep in close contact with William.

           5th…
I was at the Edinburgh Association of Spiritualists for an evening of
clairvoyance.

6th…  I was my pleasure to attend the Larkfield
Spiritualist Church,       Blantyre.  This is a
real community orientated church with dedicated committee and members.

9th – 15th…
Both Isobel and I were guests of the Belfast Spiritualist Church (SNU).  A church with its own building and makes good
use of it with something going on six days a week.

For anyone interested in the History
of Spiritualism in Northern Ireland look no further than the  Belfast Spiritualist Church’s website www.belfastspiritualistchurch.co.uk/

PLEASE NOTE: –

On 23rd September 2012 The Love and Friendship
Spiritualist Church (President Maureen Land) is moving from Langside Halls to

The Couper Institute, 86 Clarkston Road, Cathcart,
Glasgow, G44 3DA
The service remains on Sundays at 6.30pm

Gwen emails…
We are often told from the platform that the best evidence from a medium
is that what we cannot accept at the time, and yet we find out at a later date
that the information given was accurate I was a bit cynical about that and
thought “Of course, that will give the vulnerable time to twist and turn the
message inside out so it will fit something in their lives.  That probably will be the case for some, but
not for my friend Emma.

I went with Emma to a spiritualist church, and
after the medium flinging the messages open to the congregation all night, for
his last message he went directly to Emma.

He told her that there were three William’s in
spirit, Emma could only accept two.   The
medium went on to explain that the William who was coming forward had a strong
connection with horses. Yes, both the William’s in spirit loved to have a bet
on the horses.  The medium said that did
not seem right to him as he felt this William worked with horses, lots of
horses.  He went on to mention a
connection with the army, a bad limp, a homeless situation and an
inheritance… “No” said Emma, “That is not for me”.  The medium, though not forcing Emma to accept
the message, said he was sure it was for her and to think about it over the
coming days.  We talked about it on the
way home and then completely forgot about the message.  We have not been to a spiritualist church
since.
Two years later when Emma was visiting her
great-aunt, a young member of the family mentioned she was thinking of
investigating the family tree.  This
started the old lady reminiscing about past members of the family.  Emma listened with interest and then was
surprised to hear what her great aunt had to say about her cousin Josh.

Emma had never heard of Josh but a lot of what her
great-aunt said about him seemed to connect with what the medium had said about
William.  Emma, knowing that I had been
taking notes while she was getting the message, came around to see me the
following day.   I could not find my
notes but we agreed from memory that there were similarities.  But the big stumbling block was that the
medium said “William” and the great
aunt’s cousin were called “Josh”.
In June this year I was moving house and I came
across the little note book I had written the medium’s comments on.  So we rush around to see Emma’s great
aunt.  The old soul’s memory is now
starting to fail but she managed to recall enough to make the medium’s comments
very accurate.   .

Josh’s middle name was William; all of that side
of the family had William as a first or middle name.  He served in the army and was injured in
battle. This left him with a bad leg injury and a troubled mind; He worked with
horses that pulled brewer’s carts, not on the carts themselves but in the
stables.  He was left a small sum of
money by an uncle but never collected it.
He knew about the money but would never come to the family home to
receive it.    The old lady did not
mention Josh being homeless but she did say he seldom left the stable
yard.  We think he may have had a room at
the stables, stayed in a caravan there, or it would not have surprised us if he
had slept with the horses.

Gwen went on to say “It appears to be really great evidence of survival but I am still not
convinced that we live on in some other dimension when we die, and that there
can be communication.  I just cannot get
my head around this at all; there must be some other explanation
”…
I contacted Gwen to ask if the message affected Emma’s life
in any way. Back came the comment.  “Emma was amazed at the time, talked nothing
but this for a few days but has never mentioned anything about it since.  I think she has completely forgotten about it”.
What appears to be great evidence of life after death but it
leaves a few questions.
Was it a wasted message as Emma has forgotten about it?  A five minute wonder and then to think of it
no more.  Not necessarily so.  Emma’s life at the moment maybe hectic with
work or family and when life becomes not so hectic she may ponder on Josh and
she may decide to look into this further.

As a psychic researcher I wonder why Josh came forward to
Emma.  Just to say hello or was something
going on in the family at that time that was similar to something in Josh’s
life all those years ago?

We in the West usually only see donkeys these
days in a field, taking part in a donkey derby at a fete or giving rides to
children.  But there are 40,000,000 in
the world today and 96% of these are used principally as pack animals or for
draught work in transport or agriculture. After human labour, the donkey is the
cheapest form of agricultural power. They may also be ridden, or used for
threshing, raising water, milling and other work. Working donkeys are often
associated with those living at or below subsistence levels.

As you will imagine in these underdeveloped
countries working conditions and medical treatment for humans is basic to say
the least, so just imagine what it will be like for the donkey.  The Brooke Foundation, a non-profit making
organization   operate
across 10 countries to relieve the suffering of horses, donkeys & mules
working to improve the livelihoods of people living in some of the world’s
poorest communities. www.thebrooke.org

Company Overview – International animal
welfare charity working to relieve the suffering of horses, donkeys and mules
working for some of the world’s poorest communities through a combination of
veterinary treatment and animal health education.

I have
just read a heartwarming story of two blind brothers on The Broke Foundation
website.

Through the
eyes of a donkey

Two brothers blinded
by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, now rely on their donkey to
be their eyes to guide them to work.

Afghanistan
tradition discourages women from working outside the home, so when their father
was killed by a rocket, Moqim, 14, and Momin, 12 had to go to work to support
their mother and younger sister.

The brothers run a
small shop selling fruit, vegetables and cigarettes in the local market, three
kilometres away.

But there’s no local
transport between Dehsabz village in Kabul and the brothers’ shop, so they
travel on the back of their donkey.

He acts as their
eyes, guiding them to the shop early in the morning and returning them back
home in the evening.

During the day the
donkey continues working, delivering packages from the brothers’ shop to the
village.

Dehsabz village is
part of the Brooke’s expansion programme for 2012 and at the moment, a Brooke
trained paravet is providing services to animal owners.

The Brooke has advised them to give the donkey
more rest breaks during the day and not to overload the donkey.

But
absorbing the sunlight on my head,

The
colours through my eyes

The
smells through my nose

Feeling
the sand beneath my feet

The
water on my skin,

Absorbed
with the thing in the rock pools,

Fascinated
with the lives of the creatures therein.

Do
limpets cling to their rock all their lives?

Have
any become curious about the possibilities of another place?

Can
they/do they sometimes let go and allow the sea to carry them to another place?

We,
as human beings start off in small pools

Some
stay there all their lives, never straying from the area they live,

Happy
in their place,

Content
with what they have

Some
are not content,

They want to experience other places and
people in their lives,

To
change what they have

To
find out what else there is on this planet.

Others
want to conquer this world,

To
climb the highest mountain,

To
be the first in some remote place.

When
asked why do you want to climb that mountain?

They
say, because it’s there!

Some
people want to dominate,

Feel
power over others and their lives.

Some
want to be of Service, to help and protect,

To
heal.

Some
want nothing to do with people

And
grow close to the natural world

Look
to animals for the companions

Some
grow close to their god and lock themselves away

From
everything except prayer.

None
of us are exactly the same, in thought, in word or deed

None
of us are exactly the same in size, in shape, in colour or creed.

We
don’t all think alike or dance alike or smile alike.

So
what?  Why does it matter? Look at
everyone around you; imagine that they all look like you,

Are
wearing exactly the same clothes and shoes,

Talk
about the same things, have the same house and garden,

Car
(or no car), are exactly the same as you.

Have
had exactly the same experiences as you

How
do you feel?

What
would you talk about?

Really
when you think about it

We
should be grateful for all the differences in the people in the world

And
if we don’t always agree or like others –

Remember
they are their own unique person,

On
their own unique journey,

Just
as we are

Honour
their difference,

Keep
our thoughts to ourselves

And
love all humanity,

All
life on earth

For
their unique place in God’s plan.

“All are heroes who take part in the Paralympics – Also our own heroes.”….. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had many strings to his bow”……… “No – not a ghost.

19th August … It is always
a pleasure to attend the Love and Friendship Spiritualist Church, Langside
Halls Glasgow.  President Maureen Land
and her committee have worked hard over the years to make this a very
successful church and they always have time for those who need their help.

21st… A new church for me and a
fairly new church the Free Spirit Spiritualist Church, Kilmarnock.  This church has taken off in a short time and
has a dedicated committeeworking hard to make sure it is successful.

22nd… I was giving a
talk on Psychic Detection and the question & answer session which was
allocated twenty minutes ended up being over one hour long.
23rd… Taking a
meditation class.

24th…  I was going private sittings for a charity…
This is the one and only time a year I take on charity work.  Before anyone emails me asking why I will
explain.  Most other mediums take part in
charity events so I try to fill the need in areas I feel are neglected, taking
time for those who contact our churches, plus I do other forms of voluntary
work.

25th… Another new
church for me  The Leading Light Spiritualist
Church, Masonic Hall, Manse Road, Glencraig, Fife,  KY5 8AQ
well known medium Jean Bruce is president.
27th… A Special evening for myself Jackie and Iain McConnachie and the
people of Cumnock. It was five years to the day since the Cumnock Spiritualist
Church opened its doors and this was the anniversary service. It was an honour
to share the platform with Jackie and to have members of the committee take
part in the service. In those five years this church has done a lot for the
community and to educate those who are interested Spiritualism and their
psychic abilities. It was an added pleasure to have Iain and Jackie’s young son
Jack in attendance
29th… The long journey
north to Alness Spiritualist Church….
My next workshop is at the Glasgow
Association of Spiritualists on 13th October

Unfortunately
I was not one of the 11milion who tuned into CH4’s for the opening ceremony of
the London 2112 Paralympics Games but I have watched most of the events
since.  I have watched more of the
Paralympics that I did of its sister games a few weeks ago. Of course I admired
the determination and courage of the able bodied athletes but with all those
taking part in the Paralympics this courage and determination goes into a
different dimension.
A
few weeks ago we heard on a regular basis from competitors and commentators like
To finish fourth is the worst position
to be in”
and “To finish fourth is
the biggest failure of all
”. Yet to finish fourth or even qualify for these
games is a tremendous achievement.  I
realise why these comments are made, after working so hard to end up just one
pace out of the medals and at time the difference between third and fourth can
be as little as one-hundredth-of-a-second.
What different comments I have heard at the Paralympics “Fate is what happens to us, destiny is what we do with It.”, just to mention one….
Even in defeat competitors in the Paralympics seemed so much more
upbeat.
At one time disabled athletes felt they were being patronized or pitied.  But by
their commitment and courage they have earned respect from all of us, they are
great ambassadors for all those who are in their position.

That got me wondering why we
don’t have more people with disabilities being involved in the spiritualist movement.  At the moment onlyfour come to mind..

Glasgow medium Helen McEwen who is now in
spirit.  Helen founded the Toryglen
Spiritualist Church which is still going strong.  She was confined to a wheelchair for the
latter part of her life but had a great determination and I am sure I am not
the only person who felt uplifted after a chat with Helen.

It would not be obvious to many
that medium Maureen Brown has hearing and sight problems.  A hearing aid certainly kept Maureen in touch
with what was being said but her sight made it difficult to see clearly those
at the back of the church.  Yet that did
not stop Maureen going direct to whom. Spirit was trying to contact.  The only way one would notice Maureen had a
sight problem was when she would say “Can I come to you madam?” when it was a
gentleman and vice versa. But her messages were always accurate and of high
quality.  We can never mention Maureen
without mentioning her late husband Archie.
The couple was always together and often Archie would joke that he was
the medium’s chauffeur.  It was a great
loss to the Scottish Spiritual circuit when because of health reasons Maureen could
not travel to our churches.  But Maureen
is one of these people who will not lie down to anything and for a while she
was going to  schools explaining to the
pupils what it was like to be blind and deaf.

We have also within our ranks
Ivy Campbell President of the Perth Spiritualist Church.  Ivy is a great ambassador for spirit and
displays as much courage and determination as many of the Paralympics
competitors.

We have also Irish medium
Sharon Neil who is blind.

Of course there will be many
with some form of disability which is not noticeable working in committees etc,
but maybe we should look into why there are not more disabled people attending
our churches and taking part in our work.

BBC2 got the time just right
for the drama “Best of Men”.  The true
story of Dr Ludwig Guttmann, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany who founded the
Paralympics Games

Up till Dr Guttmann arrived at Stoke
Mandeville Hospital in 1944 patients were heavily sedated and largely written
off.  The spinal unit was not so much a
treatment centre as a dumping ground for bedsore-ridden invalids.  Fighting against much prejudice from fellow
doctors; Dr Guttmann came out with what seemed at the time crazy ideas to
transform the lives of those with spinal injuries.  The crazy ideas were to get the patients to
be involved in sports.  As soon as Dr
Guttmann got the ball rolling a great transformation was seen in the
patients.  Their fitness, and self-esteem
improved immensely and their depression started to wane.

Eventually the Paralympics were
born – initially in 1948 with the Stoke Mandeville Games, and then in earnest
in 1952.  Look how  these games have grown in sixty years.  Who would have believed ten years ago, never
mind sixty years, how successful such games would become. That such vast
numbers would pass through the turnstiles and the amount of media time given
over to theses games.

Dr Guttmann efforts were the
start of turning around what was a death sentence for those with spinal
injuries to having an 80% success rate of survival.  He made the patient realise they were not worthless;
they had much to offer to society. He made society realise that those with
spinal injuries were not cripples, they were not a burden of society, but they
had so much they could put back into society.

What a great acting performance
by Eddie Marsan and he looked so like the real Dr Ludwig Guttmann.

If all in society had the
same courage and determination of those seen in this drama and at the Paralympics
Games then the world would be a better place.
Not all of those with disabilities will ever be able to take part in the
Paralympics just as most of us will never qualify for the Olympic Games, but we
can always try to be the best in what we do. We can look and smile at the next
person we pass who has a disability and instead of feeling pity we can hope
that they are having the opportunity to be their best in whatever they want to
do.

 Mention the name
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and instantly the Sherlock Holmes’s novels come to
mind.  Spiritualists will go that bit
further and think of his role in the spiritualist movement.    But there were many other strings to Sir
Arthur’s bow that few know about.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also a
fervent advocate of justice and two cases he personally investigated led to two
men being exonerated of the crimes of which they were accused. In 1906,
involved a shy half-British, half-Indian lawyer who had allegedly penned
threatening letters and mutilated animals. Police were set on convicting this
gentleman, even though the mutilations continued after their suspect was
jailed.  It was partially as a result of
this case that the Court of Criminal Appeal was established in 1907.   So not
only did Conan Doyle help an innocent man but his endeavor helped establish a
way to correct other miscarriages of justice.

The second case, that of Oscar Slater,
a German Jew and gambling-den operator convicted of bludgeoning an 82-year-old
woman in Glasgow
in 1908, excited Conan Doyle’s curiosity because of inconsistencies in
the prosecution case and a general sense that Slater was not guilty. Ended up
paying most of the costs for Slater’s successful appeal in 1928.

With his writing Sir Arthur made
public the atrocities in several places around the world, particularly in The
Congo… One long pamphlet he wrote was The Crime of the Congo, in which he
denounced the horrors in that country.

There
are many ways of working for Spirit and with so much that Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle achieved with his campaigns and writing I believe that much of it was
spirit inspired.

Platform
and healing is only two of the areas where spirit will work with us.    In every walk of life spirit will be
working with us to help others in many different ways and also help us to reach
our full potential.

I was asked to visit a house where
a white ghost-like figure had been seen.
Four of the five members of this family had seen a ghostly white figure
on several occasions and they were terrified.

First on the scene were a medium
and a researcher who both claimed to have seen a white figure during their
visit…  They felt this warranted an
all-night vigil, in fact in two overnight stays, but there were no sightings on
these nights.   Over the next few weeks
the family were again aware of this figure several times and I was asked go out
and see if I could find out what was going on.

I attended with another medium and
neither of us sensed anything at all but that is not to say there was no spirit
around.   We had complete faith in the
medium and researcher that had seen something out of the ordinary on their
visit.

The sightings all had taken place
in the living room.  This room was 24ft
long and the figure always appeared at the opposite end from where the family
usually sat.  Lights in far side of the room
were on a dimmer switch so that part was darker than where the family would
congregate.

We went back a second time and as
we were talking to the family my colleague saw a white oblong shape go from one
wall to the other at the far side of the room. I saw nothing and that was
because I had my back to the far side of the room

I looked out of the back window and
I could see little…. The garden was in complete darkness… I could not see
the lane which ran along the back garden, but the lights of the houses behind
and the street lamps behind these houses were shining brightly….

We spent a long time going through
all the usual questions and there was nothing to connect to what had disturbed
spirit or why they were making themselves known.  The family had been in the house for twelve
years and there had been nothing like this till a few weeks before.  So we targeted what was going on in the
family and the house at that time – but still no answers.

As we drove away we entered the
street behind the ‘haunted house’ and I noticed something that maybe could give
us some answers.  There was a small road,
well it only run for 50yeards and went nowhere, maybe it was in preparation for
further development which had never taken place.

If a driver had not wanted to drive
round the estate to get back to the main road then he could reverse into this
gap.  That would mean that their
headlights would be shining through between the two houses opposite.  It could be possible that a vehicle’s lights
could be shining on the back living room window of the haunted house and
causing the problem.  So there was the
answer – or was it?

We went back round to the house and
after dropping my colleague off to sit with the family; I would go back round
and reverse into that short road several times.

In the pouring rain I reversed into
the gap half-a dozen times, three with my headlights dipped and three with them
on full beam. I was feeling very pleased with myself as I drove back to the
house but my pleasure was soon dampened as not one of the seven people sitting
in the room had seen the white figure.
By this time the family were looking on us as not being up to the job
and there were desperate to get rid of us.
There was no more we could do anyway I had to file this as an unsolved
case.

The incident would have remained
unsolved and I believe that the family would have decided to move elsewhere if
the following situation had not happened. And it was solved without a medium,
psychic or psychic researcher.

Over Christmas the family had
relatives from abroad staying with them and unexpectedly their eldest son had
returned home on leave from the RAF.  The
son had to sleep in a couch in the living room.

Just after 1am on his second night
sleeping on the couch the son saw this ‘ghost-like ‘figure and put it down to
the scare stories he was told from his family playing on his mind.  After a few minutes he thought no more about
it.

Two nights later he had the same
sighting and this time he thought more about it.  It suddenly dawned on him that just a few
minutes before when he saw the ‘white figure’ he heard the sound of a car with
a faulty exhaust or from a car that young ones drive about in that’s engine
roars more than the normal engine.  Not
only that but he felt he may have heard the same noise at the first sighting.

He did a little investigating and
found that a daughter of a family in the houses in the street being was often
driven home by her boyfriend and he had one of those ‘growling engines’.  A little bit more investigation and he found
that this vehicle had its headlights out of alignment.

So the RAF lad asked the young
driver if he would keep reversing into the small road just to see if it was his
lights that was causing what appeared to be a white ghostly figure at the end
of the living room.   Bingo! That was it
– no ghost but a reflection from a car’s headlights.   But there was more to this story; the faulty
lights alone would not have caused the problem.
The house next door to the so-called haunted house had a large
greenhouse and the faulty light beam was hitting off the panes of glass and
shining through the living room window.

Only by chance was this situation
sorted out.  If there had been different
or thicker curtains/blinds this may not have happened.  If the son had not unexpectedly returned home
from leave.  If it had not been Christmas
and the young girl who was in the catering trade had not returned home at 1am
when street was quiet and no TV’s on then we would have still being guessing.

Every unusual incident is not
spirit.  We have to look at logic first
and if logic cannot explain what is going on then we can start to look
elsewhere…  in this case it would have
been so easy to say “It is Spirit” and then concoct all sorts of stories as to
why it was there.
